$184,500 in Bursaries Awarded to 55 Student-athletes via the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence Sponsorship Program
On the occasion of its Spring Cocktail celebration, the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence (FAEQ), in association with 14 cherished partners, has awarded $184,500 in individual bursaries to 55 deserving student-athletes through its Sponsorship Program.
The following companies are participating in the sponsorship program, and have awarded their annual bursaries: Hason Steel, Aquam, Atrium Innovations, Bell Media, Blue Bridge, Cogeco Media, Corus Media, Fondation Bruny Surin, Fondation des Gouverneurs de Québec, Fondation Gilles Chatel, Grenier aux emplois, Imagineo, Math Sport, and Samson Groupe Conseil.
The cocktail event was held in the John Molson Room at the Molson Coors company, the latter being one of the FAEQ’s proud partners for more than 30 years. The FAEQ also celebrated the breathtaking performances of numerous bursary recipients, who have already qualified or are in the process of qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
FAEQ President for over 15 years, Mr. Claude Chagnon enthused, “The Foundation seeks to highlight the importance, renown reputation, and impressive growth that the Sponsorship Program has experienced in recent years. The latter enables both small and large companies as well as some of the Foundation’s partners, to contribute financially to making a genuine difference in the lives of student-athletes in Quebec; some have even been able to develop long-term professional relationships with the student-athletes they sponsor. Now more than ever, these companies and partners are united with the Foundation for the academic, athletic, and professional achievements of Quebec’s student-athletes.

Body found in a plastic bag in a wooded area of St. Eustache
Police are still investigating the crime scene where a body was found yesterday, wrapped in a plastic bag, in a wooded area in St. Eustache. The body was discovered by city workers in a lot near highway 13 and Grand Cote Road.
The cause of death isn’t known. And the Victim (a man) had no identification on him.

RECALL: Choripdong brand frozen seafood products recalled due to undeclared egg
The food recall warning issued on April 23, 2016 has been updated to include additional product information. This additional information was identified during the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) food safety investigation.
Seoul Trading Corporation is recalling Choripdong brand frozen seafood products from the marketplace because they contain egg which is not declared on the label. People with an allergy to egg should not consume the recalled products described below.

Mouvement Lavallois holds seventh annual brunch fundraiser

More than 500 Mouvement Lavallois members attended the municipal party’s seventh annual fundraising brunch on April 24 at the Embassy Plaza where they heard party leader Mayor Marc Demers deliver an assessment of the ML’s latest accomplishments leading towards the 2017 municipal election.
Seventh year
“It’s seven years we’ve been doing this,” Laval executive-committee vice-president David De Cotis, widely regarded as the ML’s founding member, said in a pre-brunch interview with the Laval News. “Every year the event gets bigger and bigger and the tickets sell quicker each time. It’s all good news and we’re very happy.”
In contrast to the various creative and complex means the administration of disgraced former mayor Gilles Vaillancourt used to raise money for the defunct Parti PRO des Lavallois, the ML’s annual brunch is one of the only ways of fundraising that Demers’s party relies on.
Above-board financing
“This sort of public financing allows us to be independent,” Demers told the Laval News. “This way we don’t owe any big amount of money to anybody and we make decisions based only on what’s in the interest of citizens.”
The ML’s financing method stands in stark contrast to a major element in the Parti PRO’s fundraising approach revealed during Charbonneau Commission hearings, which was closely tied to the awarding of municipal contracts to public works companies from whom a percentage of their payments would be skimmed and kicked back to the Parti PRO.
What’s in store for ML?
Demers was asked by the Laval News to state what he believes is the future of the Mouvement Lavallois. “It’s very promising,” he said. “We are healthy financially and I think people support us as you can from the turnout. I think we are working very well as a team together and things are going good and as we planned. We’re quite happy with the turnout today.”
In his summary of the party’s accomplishments, Demers noted that the City of Laval’s economy is on the upswing following some initial doldrums after the revelations of corruption at Laval city hall during the Vaillancourt administration. He also mentioned the fact the City of Laval has been taking a stand against Canada Post’s plan to abandon door-to-door delivery, that Laval is also against the Energy East pipeline, and that municipal arenas all over the island are being renovated while public library branches are being updated.
New logo and name unveiled
Later during the gathering, De Cotis revealed the ML’s new name and logo: henceforth the party will be known as the Mouvement Lavallois-équipe Marc Demers. “An image is important as it allows people to make a first impression for themselves,” he said. “We wanted something that reflected the professionalism of our team. A quality visual identity is a form of respect for the hundreds of members of the party who wish to see themselves in an image that reflects their values.”
City concludes Earth Week with planting of trees

Elected officials from the City of Laval brought the annual Laval Earth Week to a fitting conclusion last week by overseeing the planting of more than 50 trees symbolizing the municipality’s commitment to environmental values.
Tree planting challenge
Mayor Marc Demers and Laval executive-committee member and city councillor for Sainte-Rose Virginie Dufour were assisted in the planting of the trees on a plot of land near the corner of Autoroute 440 and Daniel Johnson Boul. by representatives of several local environmental organizations. Over the following days, a total of 54 trees were planted in the area.
The area chosen, next to the heavily-travelled autoroute, is considered to be a challenging place to grow trees since it’s fully exposed to extremes of weather, including wind, as well as air pollution from vehicle acceleration and salt residue from the highway during the winter. For these reasons the trees planted were carefully selected from species considered to be especially hardy.
New ‘green’ committee
In other news occurring around Earth Day, the city announced that on the initiative of the Canadian Conference on Urban Forestry, which is holding a conference in Laval this autumn, a new municipal greening committee has been created. In fact, last week’s tree planting was one of the committee’s first activities.
Made up of representatives of the City of Laval as well as from organizations dedicated to the preservation of Laval’s wooded areas, the committee will be bringing forward other proposals for consideration. According to the city, their first goal will be to green up the area near the Carrefour Laval, thus reducing the impact of heat islands.
Businesses invited
“To meet the challenges that await us with regards to the greening of Laval, it will be essential to double up our efforts,” the mayor said last week. “In this regard, I invite the Laval business community to express their interest and to become actively involved in the future actions of the committee.”
“Following today’s tree planting, our greening committee will be submitting a series of new recommendations,” added Sainte-Rose councillor Dufour. “The members will also be identifying potential partnerships with an eye to offering our citizens an environment for living that is greener than ever and healthier.”
Chomedey Soccer Club home opener
Home opener for the Chomedey Soccer U17 AAA was against the Fabrose Soccer Club at Laval Liberty soccer field.
Sunday April 17th, on a warm spring day, the Chomedey Soccer Club started the 2016 season. The home opener for the U17 AAA was against the Fabrose Soccer Club at Lavel Liberty soccer field. Shortly before the beginning of the official ceremonies, The Laval News spoke with Jimmy Patsilivas Vice President and member of the board of the Chomedey Soccer Club, about the upcoming season.
- What are the main objectives for the Chomedey soccer club this season?
- To give as much support as we can to the kids, they deserve our help to develop their soccer abilities and potential, we want to allow them to grow with our support on the field as well as develop in them the passion and love for the game of soccer.
- What is your biggest challenge this year?
- Our biggest challenge for this year is to unite all involved, parents and delegates around the club, for the children, run the club in the most transparent way possible, always keeping in mind we the club, are there for and because our young players.
- You have been registering players since February, how many players will you have this summer, including house league and competition, how does that compare to other Laval clubs and to the previous years?
- As a matter of fact, to date we have reached our objective which was to equal last year’s number of registered players. With that said, we are still finalizing our figures and the total count , we are very confident we will have a good number of players for this year.
- With the Chomedey Soccer Club’s growing reputation, have you seen an increase in transfer requests from players coming from other clubs?
- Yes we have seen many. With the new rules from the region, we have requests from a number of players from other clubs asking to join the Chomedey soccer club which makes us very proud. We are happy to have these players on board, they might think they are the ones gaining by joining our club but we in turn benefit greatly by these additions to our teams.
- Among the competition teams, which teams do you expect to do well this year?
- This year we have a U14 AA boys team coached by Boubacar Coulibaly, former honoured player from Université de Montreal, will be trying to qualifying them for the AAA level. We also have our very first U14 AA girls that will be trying to qualifying for the triple letters , coached by Eugenio Zuniga. Our first triple A girls teams, this is something extraordinary for Chomedey soccer. Next year I am proud to say, in all we will have 3 full teams, two boys teams and one girls, at the AAA level in a geographical area that is basically very small.
- In the house league, what will the Chomedey Soccer Club be doing to keep kids in soccer and off the streets?
- Our house league is the core, the heart of our club; it is what pumps the club, keeps us going. This year we are going to do our best, the utmost to ensure we give them the best services, it is a fantastic division. Believe it or not that is where we look for future good players , we can find the kids that have potential and bring them up to a higher division. Ultimately we owe the success of the club to our division three, our house league. We also do an extra effort with them to pass on the love for soccer, keep them playing on the field and off the streets.
- I see here on the field and on the player jersey some big corporate names as sponsors, how will these partnerships benefit our young athletes?
- This year is a very special year for us and our sponsors since we rekindled our passion and support for each other. We have great partners: Marchildon Orthotics; Passion Soccer; Diadora ;Caisse Desjardins de Chomedey and one special supporter taking on full sponsorship of the AAA team, Allô Mon Coco, represented by Tom Bountis. With such partners our lives and that of our players are that much easier, everyone can concentrate on playing and nothing else. At the end of the day what are partners give, comes directly back to the kids.
- Can you see the day where a local sponsor would ask one of your star players to endorse their product as they do with Olympic medallists?
- Absolutely, we have one of our U17 AAA boys that played for us two years ago who is now with the Montreal Impact Academy , so I could say, well on his way there. Also if he needs our support in the future we will be there to help in any way we can
- How do you see your personal future with the Chomedey soccer club organization?
- I think my time is done. I took on this challenge years ago, with the objective to strengthen the technical aspect of the club’s players, I have seen players develop, what I had set out to achieve is done. This will be my last year as Vice-President with the Chomedey soccer club
It is time for me to go and let new people take over and run the club. The CA and I have put in the foundation and it is structured in a very transparent way and, at the end of the day, I think, the best setup for our kids.
I wish everyone the best of luck in the future. As for me, I will be on the field, coaching, the passion that brought me to the Chomedey soccer club in the first place and my goal will be to achieve higher levels of coaching.
The club’s partners are involved and proud of sponsoring the Chomedey Soccer Club, when asked why they do it, Tom Bountis from Allô Mon Coco responded:
“We are a restaurant that thrives in Laval so I believe that we have to give back to the community. I myself started playing for a Chomedey team called Cosmos so it’s only normal that now, 33 years later we sponsor the club and put our logo on the shirts for 1200 kids to play soccer. It was a no brainer for us. The association needs the money, we support our youth and we have a sense of pride when we see 10 teams on a filed with our logo.
I wish them all the best for the upcoming season and hope they have fun.”
Laval Rowing Club the 2016 season is just around the corner
After a long winter, the Laval Rowing Club (CAL) will soon begin its season on the water. In terms of innovations this year, CAL has revised its fee schedule and its various programs to provide more flexibility to its members. Returning this summer, the day camp for youth 10 and older, the training “Learn to Row”, the programs “Sports-Recreation”, the “Competitive” group for youth and adults. This year marks the club’s 60th anniversary. Festivities are planned to mark this sporting milestone in Laval and rowing in Quebec.
Learn a new sport accessible to all (just need to know how to swim). No equipment purchase necessary, the CAL has a fleet of boats suitable for all levels. All outings on the water and all training exercises are under the supervision of monitors and qualified coaches.
