The city of Laval has adopted its 2011 improved accessibility action plan for 2011 which has been presented by Laval’s Joint Accessibility Advisory Council (CABC). The projects foreseen in this action plan include improving access to the Jolibourg, St-Noël-Chabanel and Centre du Sablon Community Centers. Improvement projects include the additions of interior and exterior ramps, automatic doors as well as adapted washroom facilities. The Jolibourg community centre swimming pool will benefit from the installation of a hydraulic chair to facilitate entry into the water while Lucerne arena will benefit from the additions of automatic sliding doors at the entrance, rehabilitated public toilets accessible for wheel chairs as well as reserved spectator’s spaces for wheel chairs. Also additional reserved parking spaces for handicapped drivers have been scheduled for several municipal buildings and sites on public streets throughout Laval. The municipal library service has also developed a volunteer based home delivery of library books for seniors with limited mobility or living in residences.
On February 11, 1986 the administration created the Joint Accessibility Advisory Council (CABC) of Laval becoming the first major Quebec municipality to allocate an annual budget for the realization of projects that would render public buildings more accessible for residents with mobility limitations. The Committee is formed by members that include municipal employees, members of various organizations representing the needs of the disabled, a representative the OPHQ1, citizens and a consultant.
