The Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital (JRH) announced that Barbara Novek, a leading Montreal tax lawyer, was elected President and Chair of its Board of Directors at its Annual General Meeting today. Ms. Novek has been a member of the Board since 1998 and has held many positions, most recently as Vice-President.

“With its superregional mandate” explained Ms. Novek, “the JRH is a jewel in the Quebec healthcare network.  Along with my colleagues on the Board we look forward to working with management to ensure that the JRH remains a centre of excellence at the forefront of research, teaching and patient care. Our work in areas ranging from oncology to stroke and traumatic brain injury, for example, has made us a leader in rehabilitation for the benefit of all Quebecers, and we intend to build on this solid foundation.”

Newly appointed Vice-Presidents of the Board are real estate executives Yanaï Elbaz and Michael Feil. Joining the Executive Committee as new members are Chartered Accountants Lucy Lazar and Howard Berish.  Montreal entrepreneur Ralph Bienstock  continues to serve as President of the Board of Governors .

Barbara Novek, a founding partner of Sweibel Novek L.L.P, a Montreal law firm specializing in tax planning and tax litigation, has been recognized repeatedly in the annual publication of The Best Lawyers in Canada in the practice areas of Taxation Law and Trusts and Estates. She was named as one of LawDay’s top 60 leading lawyers in Canada in the area of Estates and Trusts for 2009 and is the author of numerous scholarly articles on taxation.

Yanaï Elbaz is the CEO of the Corporation de gestion immobilière de santé (Cogis) and is the Associate Director-General of Redevelopment, Planning and Real Estate Management at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).  Michael Feil, the former President of the JRH Foundation, is Senior Vice President at the Westcliff group of companies, a major real estate developer.  In 2007, the JRH Research Centre became the JRH Feil-Oberfeld Research Centre, in recognition of the longstanding  contribution of these two community leaders to the JRH’s research effort.

“While we are committed to strengthening our deep roots in the Jewish community, it is important to emphasize that the JRH plays a vital role in Quebec’s health care network,” added Ms. Novek. “We take pride in our close collaboration with the Agences of Laval and Montreal and our partnerships with McGill, the MUHC, Sacré Coeur Hospital, the Laval CSSS, and the Jewish General Hospital, to name a few. Our goal is to enhance and broaden these relationships in the months and years ahead.”
